War, Conflict, and Politics

The United Nations approved force in Lebonan with a newly drafted “rules of engagement.” It seemed appropriate to take a look at how John Adams connected politics and conflict:
“The science of government it is my duty to study, more than all other
sciences; the arts of legislation and administration and negotiation
ought to take the place of, indeed exclude, in a manner, all other arts.
I must study politics and war, that our sons may have liberty to study
mathematics and philosophy. Our sons ought to study mathematics and
philosophy, geography, natural history and naval architecture,
navigation, commerce and agriculture in order to give their children
a right to study painting, poetry, music, architecture, statuary,
tapestry and porcelain.”

Do you remember the mid-eighties song “I need a hero”? This Adams quote reminds me of just how much our acceptance of the “dumbification” of our executive has gone. The character displayed in these words by Adams represents the ideal position that I would like my commander-in-chief to have. The current stance of “I just don’t have time to learn all of that stuff; that’s why I have advisors” has gotten rediculous. I know that this blog is about Adams, but I can’t help but put our current president into the same historical context as Adams. I am infinitely grateful that our leaders back then had stronger ruling skills and more humane philosophies.

Ryan, this is a John Adams blog, but it is much more. It is really a current events and political blog using John Adams words as inspiration and as a starting point.

Also, I would certainly draw a number of similarities between the two presidents. Both under fire, both make worst lists with frequency, and both will likely continue to change through the course of history long after they are out of office and even gone from this life.
